Heroic Train Staff Member Suffers Life-Threatening Wounds Amid Mass Knife Incident on High-Speed Service
A valiant train employee who intervened to protect passengers during a mass knife incident on a express train has suffered critical injuries, police stated on Sunday.
Particulars of the Terrifying Incident
Surveillance footage reportedly shows the staff member attempting to halt the attacker as the train journeyed between a city and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses described a terrifying 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with injured victims fleeing through carriages.
The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for questioning. Authorities declared a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
Crisis Reaction and Consequences
The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have since been released from hospital.
A bystander recorded the suspect waving a big knife and being subdued with a stun device as he faced police on the platform. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, end my life."
âThis awful event has created broad consequences. We are thinking of the victims and their families â particularly the brave member of train personnel whose family are being supported by trained officers,â stated a senior law enforcement official.
Labor Reaction and Calls for Action
Rail unions were swift to praise employees and demand more action. One union official said he would be âseeking immediate meetings with government, rail employers and police to ensure that we have the strongest available support, tools and robust protocols in operationâ.
A different association representative encouraged the rail company and authorities âto act quickly to review safety, to help the affected employees, and to make sure nothing like this occurs againâ.
Driver Praised for Quick Action
The operator who halted the service at Huntingdon was reported as being âdeeply affectedâ but âwellâ, and has been praised by union representatives for doing âprecisely what was neededâ.
âThe driver didnât halt the service in the middle of two stops where itâs clearly difficult for the first responders to reach, but he continued going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much already there,â stated a union representative.

Authorities stated they received the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An witness described initially thinking if the event was a Halloween prank, but soon realized from people's faces that it was real.
Police have confirmed there is nothing to suggest the incident was a terror-related incident and have asked the community to provide with any further information.
Train services on the impacted line are expected to experience delays until the following day, with travelers recommended to defer their travel where feasible.
